Vamos a la batalla

How the disease progresses, day by day

  1. Day 0Exposure — aerosol infection
  2. Days 2–5Infection in tonsils and bronchial lymph nodes
  3. Days 6–9Systemic infection of lymphoid tissue — viremia
  4. Days 10–14Spread: surface epithelia, glandular tissue, and CNS cells
  5. Days 14–20The puppy's immune response

Effective immune response

Recovery with no clinical signs.

Deficient immune response

Viral replication continues: the virus spreads into respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous tissue (encephalomyelitis). From there it can lead to acute encephalomyelitis (fatal) or, within 1 to 2 months, to a delayed immune response where multisystemic signs disappear but chronic encephalomyelitis remains with nervous-system signs — which by around 24 months can end in old dog encephalitis or in recovery.
